In reply to whoosh1 • Mar 1, 2013. 1. If you like to focus close up the 70-200 f4 at 200 mm gives more magnifications than the 70-300 at 300 mm. Adding a 1.4x converter to the 70-200 gives more magnification - close to the legendary 70-180 macro at 180mm. -- hide signature --.

The colors on the 70-200 f4 VR are Nikon classic! I'd only get the cheaper 2.8 lenses if you plan to do more portraiture work, where the 2.8 at closer distances will give it a bit more subject separation. The 70-200 f4 though is an amazing all-arounder.
I shot on Canon APSC DSLR in the past with 70-200/F4 and now use D7200 with 70-200/F2.8. I reviewed my photos from last couple of years and there were a significant number at 200mm. The Fuji zoom goes only to 140mm. Recently, Fuji has 40MP bodies, which give crop option. That option wasn't available earlier.
And also own a 300 f2.8 VR and 500 f4 AF-S. The 70-200 f2.8 VR is both versatile and sharp on all three of my cameras: D300, D300s and D7100. And it has some useful range for wildlife with the TC-14E. With DX I just can't see giving up the shallow DOF with all three of my current long lenses.
